UFC 290: The Two Female Fighters On The Alexander Volkanovski vs. Yair Rodriguez Card
Fans and enthusiasts are concentrated on the highly anticipated fight between Alexander Volkanovski and Yair Rodriguez as the eagerly anticipated UFC 290 nears. Volkanovski has a stellar record of 25 victories and just two defeats and is eager to avenge his contentious loss against Islam Makhachev. The event will include several well-known figures from the MMA community. The major drawback is that there won’t be any female fights; Yazmin Jauregui and Denise Gomes will meet for one battle.
Yazmin Jauregui enters the Octagon with a 10-0-0 record. The 24-year-old weighs 115 pounds and is 5’3″ tall. The traditional combatant reaches 64.” Denise “Dee” Gomes weighs 115 pounds and is 5’2″. The orthodox fighter hopes to increase her record, which is now 7-2-0. The 23-year-old grows her network to 63 people. Denise Gomes connects on 4.67 significant strikes per minute, whereas Yazmin Jauregui lands 6.35 per minute regarding important strikes. Gomes scores 47% of the important strikes she attempts, compared to Jauregui’s 41%. Jauregui suffers severe attacks at a rate of 4.23 per minute, whereas “Dee” only permits 3.13. Gomes can block 55% of the strokes sent her way, while Jauregui can deflect 57% of the important punches her opponents send at her.
In the UFC strawweight rankings, Jauregui ranks 21st, while Gomes ranks 31st. Yazmin Jauregui is not as proficient a wrestler regarding takedowns; she can only get one 0.40 times per third. Jauregui completes her takedown attempts 15% of the time while blocking 85% of her opponents’ efforts. Gomes successfully puts her opponents on the ground on 33% of her takedown attempts while successfully defending 50% of all takedowns made against her. Yazmin Jauregui vs Denise Gomes 7/8/2023 Expert Picks, Tips and Odds
At UFC Fight Night: Holloway vs. Allen, Denise Gomes, ranked 31st in the same category, just earned her first career UFC victory by TKOing Bruna Brazil in the second round. Watching how they perform in their forthcoming battle will be intriguing because both athletes want to establish themselves in the strawweight class.
In her last match, Denise Gomes faced Bruna Brasil. In round 2, while on the ground, she received a hit to the head that gave her victory. Gomes connected on 38% of her major long-range strikes, whereas Brazil scored 60% of her long-range hits. Gomes ultimately connected on 54% of 93 major strikes she attempted or 58%. She ultimately succeeded on 28 of her 58 important headshots. In the bout, Brazil ultimately scored 15 of the 22 critical blows. She ultimately connected on 7 of 11 of those powerful blows with the head. When comparing the total number of blows she threw in the battle, Gomes connected on 94 of 133, whereas Brazil connected on 43 of 50.
Yazmin Jauregui vs. Denise Gomes. Yazmin Jauregui (10-0) started in Combate, where she eventually won a one-night, three-fight competition in 2021 to gain entry into the Octagon. She missed a year of competition but made up for it with two thrilling wins over Iasmin Lucindo and Istela Nunes. As a professional, she has defeated seven opponents by knockout.
Denise Gomes (7-2) made her UFC debut against Loma Lookboonmee less than a month after defeating Rayanne dos Santos in the Contender Series. She struggled with her opponent’s striking and grappling, suffering her first loss since making her pro debut in 2017. Dos Santos had much better success against Bruna Brasil, a veteran of the DWCS, submitted halfway through the second round. She loses one inch of reach since she is the shorter lady at 5’2″.
I like Jauregui’s chances here, even if her crazy aggressiveness will always make her vulnerable, even against purportedly “lesser” strikers. Gomes is just as ready to put in the work and trade blows, but he moves much more slowly than Jauregui and has as many defensive weaknesses. Milana Dudieva’s two counter-drops of her raise more concern than Jauregui’s clipping by the far more threatening Istela Nunes.
Gomes’ wrestling has a possible X-factor, but given how poorly it performed against Lookboonmee, Jauregui shouldn’t be in danger. For her second UFC victory against young Brazilian finishes, Jauregui clips her in a firefight.
Prediction: Jauregui via first round technical knockout
